Quality use of medicines
A process that involves (11):
- Selecting treatment options – medicines may be chosen to manage health conditions and treat illnesses. They must only be chosen where they offer the most appropriate alternative to self-care, prevention and other management or therapeutic options, which must be considered and accessible
- Choosing suitable medicines – in selecting, prescribing or deprescribing a medicine, the clinical and non-clinical factors, person’s experience, needs, preferences and values, potential benefits and harms, and out-of-pocket cost of access must be considered; and
- Using medicines safely and effectively – getting the best possible results means monitoring outcomes, reporting adverse events, managing symptoms or side effects, minimising misuse, overuse and underuse, and empowering and supporting people to make decisions to use medicines safely and effectively.
