If you need a nursing, midwifery or direct care skills assessment for a Skilled Migration visa application, you will need to apply for an ANMAC skills assessment.

ANMAC is a government-approved assessing authority responsible for evaluating the skills of migrating nurses, midwives and other health care workers to ensure they meet Australian standards.

The Department of Home Affairs uses the outcome of your skills assessment to determine your eligibility for a skilled migration visa.

ANMAC Conducts Skills Assessments for:

  • Registered and fully qualified nurses and midwives from overseas who have qualifications from recognised countries
  • Nurses and midwives with a 'Notice of in-principle approval of registration subject to Proof of identity' from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra)
  • Nurses and midwives who are registered in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Health care workers with qualifications or experience in a direct care role.

What ANMAC Does Not Do:

  • Register nurses, midwives or health care workers (registration is handled by the NMBA).
  • Find employment for nurses, midwives or health care workers.
  • Provide advice on obtaining or maintain registration in Australia.
  • Offer information or advice on visa or immigration matters.
  • Assist in finding a migration agent.
  • Provide information or advice on employment or industrial relations matters.
  • Deliver education programs or training.

To work in Australia, all nurses and midwives need to be registered. Registration is separate from our process. To find out about nursing and midwifery registrations contact the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

The Assessment Criteria

When nurses, midwives, and health care workers apply for an assessment, ANMAC uses a criteria-based assessment process.

If you apply for an assessment:

  • You will provide documents to demonstrate that you meet the criteria.
  • ANMAC does not require you to take any tests.
  • All documents will be reviewed before determining the assessment outcome.

ANMAC's criteria-based assessments include:

  • Identity checks
  • Education and training checks
  • Work experience checks
  • Registration and certification checks
  • English language test results (for Full Skills Assessment only)

If You Do Not Meet the Criteria

  • You will be determined as not suitable for skilled migration as a nurse or midwife.
  • ANMAC will explain which criteria were not met.
  • ANMAC cannot provide on what you need to do to become suitable for migration.

If you disagree with the decision, you can apply for an appeal of your assessment decision. Please refer to the Skilled Migration Services Appeals Policy (192KB)

For information about education and training, contact the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and enquire about their registration process.
