National Board

A National Health Practitioner Board continued or established by regulations made under section 231 of the National Law. Appointed by Ministerial Council to regulate the profession in the public interest and meet the responsibilities set down in the National Law. National Board members and/or state board members and/or committee members are delegated the functions/powers of the National Board.

National Health Practitioner Ombudsman (NHPO)

The NHPO is a free and independent complaint handling service open to all. The NHPO can assist with complaints about bodies in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (National Scheme), including the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra), the 15 National Boards, accreditation authorities and specialist medical colleges.

National Health Training Package - HLT07

The HLT07 Health Training Package was collaboratively developed by the Industry Skills Council with funding from the Department of Education and Training and represents national industry standards for health professionals in the vocational education and training sector, which includes enrolled nurses.

National scheme

The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for registered health practitioners was established by the Council of Australian Governments to ensure that all regulated health professionals are registered against consistent, high quality national professional standards and can practise across state and territory borders.

New education provider

Means any education provider that has never submitted a nursing or midwifery education program of study to ANMAC for accreditation.

New nursing or midwifery education program

Means any nursing or midwifery education program that an education provider has not previously delivered or where a previously accredited education program has not been conducted for a period greater than one year.

Notation

Is used by National Boards to describe and explain the scope of a practitioner’s practice by noting the limitations on that practice. The notation does not change the practitioner’s scope of practice but may reflect the requirements of a registration standard.

Notifiable conduct (s. 140)

The registered health practitioner has: 

  • practised the practitioner’s profession while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, or 
  • engaged in sexual misconduct in connection with the practice of the practitioner’s profession, or 
  • placed the public at risk of substantial harm in the practitioner’s practice of the profession because the practitioner has an impairment, or 
  • placed the public at risk of harm because the practitioner has practised the profession in a way that constitutes a significant departure from accepted professional standards.
