Engagement Principles

We use a principles-based approach for our engagement activities. Our principles guide our activities and clarify the purpose of our engagement. They ensure we deliver value for all participants in our activities. We have 5 principles that we use to guide our activities.

1. Purposeful

Our engagement activities are purposeful and communicated with stakeholders.

We ensure this by:

  • Being aware of stakeholders’ goals, environment, expertise and level of influence
  • Conducting focused and meaningful engagement
  • Planning communication and managing expectations

2. Relevant

We use a range of engagement techniques to ensure our approach aligns with our strategic goals
and vision.

We do this by:

  • Selecting the most suitable engagement methods
  • Streamlining processes to define and lead cost-effective stakeholder engagement activities
  • Evaluating each activity to ensure a process of continuous improvement

3. Open and honest

We are open and honest about what we do and share the results from our activities.

We do this by:

  • Promoting meaningful participation
  • Providing information that fosters a culture of information sharing
  • Identifying and explaining the engagement process
  • Letting stakeholders know how their participation helps the project
  • Providing clear and relevant information on our aims, goals and strategies
  • Establishing avenues to promote transparency and feedback processes
  • Being honest and willing to acknowledge mistakes, misunderstandings and what is not known.

4. Inclusive

Our activities are inclusive and respectful. They consider the experience, perspective and needs of
our stakeholders.

We do this by:

  • Finding and inviting stakeholders to take part in engagement activities
  • Being open to different views
  • Listening and contributing to conversations
  • Respecting stakeholders’ abilities
  • Appreciating the benefits of mutual learning
  • Working to meet the different communication needs and preferences of stakeholders wherever
    possible.

5. Responsive

We acknowledge stakeholder participation in a prompt and responsive manner.

We do this by:

  • Responding to stakeholders within a reasonable time
  • Acknowledging and addressing stakeholders’ needs and concerns.
  • Keeping the promises made to stakeholders.
