When accreditation expires, you must either provide a transition plan for students to the newly accredited program, or put a teach-out period in place.

When Accreditation Expires

All accredited nursing and midwifery programs of study have a date when their accreditation ends. This is to ensure they're updated and contemporary to workforce and industry requirements as accreditation standards change.

Enrolled students should still be able to finish their education when accreditation ends. Education providers can assist them to do this by either:

  • providing a transition plan to the newly accredited program of study
  • allowing students to finish the program with a teach-out period.

Transition and teach-out arrangements of the expiring program must be outlined in the program's application for accreditation.

Note: You can't enrol new students to a program that's reached its accreditation expiry date. (There
is an exception to this for students entering Year 2 of a registered nurse program on an approved
enrolled nurse pathway).

Transitioning Students

Transitioning students means moving them from a program that has or is about to come to the end of its accreditation, to a newly accredited program.

This is the preferred option for managing students when a program's accreditation expires. But sometimes accreditation standards change quite significantly from one version to another. When this happens, it can be impractical to transition students to a new program of study. Instead, your program will need to have a teach-out arrangement in place.

Teach-out Arrangements

When you aren't able to transition enrolled students to a newly accredited program, you must have a teach-out arrangement in place. This enables students to finish the program they started, and still register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia when they graduate.

The length of your program's teach-out period is calculated to give students enough time to complete the program. It will always be equal to: the length of the program + 1/2 the length of the program.

Note: An expired program in a teach-out period must keep meeting the standards it was accredited to. This means it will continue being monitored by ANMAC and will receive a Program Monitoring Report and an annual fee until all students have been finalised.
