ACT Government Announces Major Investment in Nursing and Midwifery Workforce

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) welcomes the ACT Government's announcement of a substantial investment in the nursing and midwifery workforce. Revealed in the 2024–25 ACT Budget, over $86 million will be allocated to recruit more than 137 new full-time equivalent nurses and midwives. This significant funding aims to improve staff safety, wellbeing, and patient care across Canberra.

Key Highlights:

  • $2000 Education and Development Boost: This initiative will allow nurses and midwives to access advanced training and educational opportunities, ensuring they remain at the forefront of medical advancements and provide the highest level of care to the community.
  • Annual $750 Professional Development Allowance: This allowance supports healthcare professionals in regularly updating their skills and knowledge, fostering excellence in patient care and investing in the future of healthcare in Canberra.
  • Safe Nurse and Midwife-to-Patient Ratios: The ACT Government will continue implementing safe staffing ratios through a phased approach, ensuring adequate staffing levels to maintain high-quality care and improve working conditions.
  • $21 Million for Additional Support: The budget also includes over $21 million to support various aspects of the proposed ACT Public Sector Nursing and Midwifery Enterprise Agreement. This funding will cover educational boosts, professional development allowances, pay increases, and a review of rostering to enhance work patterns and wellbeing.
