Please note: We do not assess your skills in a face-to-face test. A skills assessment is completed through the review of your relevant qualifications and/or work experience.
Follow all the steps to make sure your application is processed smoothly with no delays
To apply for a Direct Care Skills Assessment, you must have:
- a Certificate III minimum qualification in a relevant field, including nursing-related study* or study in personal or aged care (minimum course duration 6 months). You must also be able to provide evidence of at least 120 hours practical experience within the training you completed
AND/OR
- full-time paid work experience of at least 12 months in a relevant area completed in Australia or overseas within the last 5 years. This includes nursing, direct or aged care work.
'Relevant' means a course or work where direct care roles and responsibilities are the focus (this does not include disability or child care)
*If you are a disability support worker or provide general household assistance then you will need to apply for a skills assessment with the Australian Community Workers Association under ANZSCO 423111 Aged or Disabled Carer.
You will need to provide us with:
- proof of identity documents and a recent passport-style photo
- if applicable, graduation certificates and transcripts from relevant qualifications
- If you have completed a non-nursing qualification you will need to provide evidence of 120 hours practical placement.
- if applicable, a professional reference written by a supervisor to support paid work in a direct care role.
- a migration agent declaration document (if you have an agent)
- payment for your assessment ($545 AUD).
It’s important that you upload:
- high quality scans or photos of your documents
- a photo of yourself that meets passport-photo quality requirements.
- please use the Australian Government's photo requirements as a guide

Documents You Need to Email or Post
Overseas professional registration documents can be emailed to verification@anmac.org.au.
Please note ANMAC cannot accept registration documents received from free web-based email accounts such as Gmail or Yahoo.
If email is not available, your relevant authority can post your registration document to:

Document Quality
Before you upload your documents, make sure they meet our quality requirements.
After you have your documents ready, and made sure the document quality meets our requirements, you can start your application in the Skilled Migrant Application portal.
To upload the documents for your assessment, you need to:
- Create a new account. New applications will need a new account and email address.
- Complete the online form. This can be found on the 'apply' page
- Pay the fees with a credit or debit card. Do not log out before your payment is processed.
- Check your email for your reference number, and confirmation of your application and payment. Contact us if you do not see it within 24 hours.
It’s important that you keep note of your reference number, as this will be requested from if you contact ANMAC via email or phone.
After you have created your account and completed the online form and payment, you can upload your documents to the Skilled Migrant Application Portal
To upload your documents:
- Log into your account.
- Upload your documents. This can be done in the Skilled Migrant Application Portal once you have applied
- Save your application. This will ensure that the uploaded documents are saved to your account.
After you submit your application:
- Check your email for any assessment updates. You may not hear from us for at least 6 weeks. See current wait times at the home page. We will send you an email if we need any documents or information.
- Check the application status by logging into the Skilled Migrant application portal.
After we assess your application, we will send an email with your Letter of Determination which is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. The letter will detail your valid qualifications, and if applicable, your work experience and nominated ANZSCO code
Quality Requirements
Your photos and documents need to match our quality requirements so we can process your skills assessment application as quickly as possible. If you need to re-upload any documents it will delay your assessment outcome.
Documents need to be:
- a colour copy of an original document (not a certified copy)
- scanned at 600 dpi or higher resolution
- saved using the .pdf file format.
If the document is in another language, we require both the original and a translated version in English by a NAATI certified translator.
Government Issued identity documents:
- Copy of passport biodata (double page)
- Change of name document (if applicable)
- Two additional forms of identification such as:
- birth certificate, driver license, or national ID card
Other identity documents:
- passport-style photo of yourself. This needs to be:
- a high-quality passport style photo (taken within the last 6 months)
- saved using a .jpeg, .jpg or .png file format.
- please use the Australian Government's photo requirements as a guide
If you are applying for this assessment with your qualification, we require:
- Graduation certificate(s) from all 'relevant' qualifications/courses
- Corresponding complete transcripts of results
- Evidence of at least 120 hours of practical experience completed within your study
'Relevant' means a course or work where direct care roles and responsibilities are the focus (this does not include disability or child care)
If you are applying with a nursing qualification from overseas:
- We need a 'verification of registration' or 'certificate of good standing letter' from the organisation responsible for registering nurses and midwives in the country where you worked.
- This confirms your registration, and that there have been no issues with your professional practice in that country.
The regulatory authority where you are registered must post or email this document to ANMAC.
To avoid assessment delays:
- Contact your regulatory authority directly.
- Ask them to send your documents before applying for your skills assessment.
We can not accept:
- A scanned copy of the letter from you or any other source outside of the regulatory authority
- Emails sent from a free web-based email address.

If you are applying using your work experience, you need to prove that you have 12 months (or more) full-time paid work experience in a relevant area. Relevant areas do not include disability or child care.
Please upload the following documents to the ANMAC portal:
- a professional reference letter written by a nursing supervisor. This is mandatory. The reference letter must describe your role, the tasks you undertake on a daily basis and provide the dates and hours of employment.
- a service statement issued by your employer confirming your dates of employment.
- ANMAC must be able to verify your claims of work experience.
- confirmed fraud will result in a negative skills assessment outcome and a 2-year lock-out period for a new skills assessment.
Please note that professional reference letters will only be accepted if they meet our requirements (outlined below).
If you are applying for this assessment using your work experience, you must upload a Professional Reference Letter.
A Professional Reference Letter is a written statement issued by your employer, confirming your employment on an official letterhead. The official letterhead should include the organisation's full address details, telephone, email and website addresses. The letter must be composed and signed by your direct manager/supervisor.
All professional reference letters must include:
- official company letterhead
- your full name
- the working hours per week
- start and finish dates of employment
- your position held at the organisation
- detail about your clinical skills and competencies in your role
- generic content and position descriptions are not sufficient
- position title and signature of your referee
Your references need to have contact information for each referee, including their:
- official workplace email address (we will not accept emails that are sent from free web-based email accounts)
- contact telephone number for the organisation (mobile phone numbers will not be accepted).
Professional references are not:
- pay slips
- tax certificates
- job descriptions
- service and human resource statements.
If you have a migration agent or are an agent, fill in the Agent Declaration Form (146KB) and include the form in the assessment application.
Please note: This assessment does not get you a job in Australia, nor does it guarantee you successful migration. You will need to find work with an employer that has entered into a labour (workforce) agreement with the Australian Government, specifically an Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement or a Designated Area Migration Agreement
