On 7 August, ANMAC joined the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the National Association of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners (NAATSIHWP). This day marks a significant milestone in recognising the essential contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners in our healthcare system.

In addition, NAATSIHWP launched the Professional Scopes of Practice for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners document. This document highlights the unique role of this workforce and will be invaluable for the community, health leaders, and other health practitioners to understand their importance and contributions in our healthcare system. As highlighted in the document:

“With cultural intellect and primary health care training, [Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners] provide the ‘glue’ that keeps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people connected to, and engaged in, the health care system.”

Professor West, Chair of ANMAC and a descendent of the Kalkadunga and Djkunde Peoples from Queensland, who started her career in health as an Aboriginal Health Worker shared her reflections:

"NAATSIHWP's dedication over the past 15 years has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of the critical role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners play in our healthcare system. Their unique combination of cultural knowledge and healthcare expertise ensures that our communities receive care that is both effective and respectful. The document launched today underscores their invaluable contributions and sets the standard for excellence in culturally safe healthcare."

We recognise the outstanding dedication of NAATSIHWP and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners. Their daily contributions are essential to building a healthcare system that is both culturally safe and effective.

Congratulations on 15 years, NAATSIHWP.
